‘If Plants Could Talk’ is a project by ‘The Rogue Topiarist’(wildsnoeier). The Rogue Topiarist is one of Olivier Scheffer’s alter egos. For the last two years, he has been pruning shrubs around the city, always in a conceptual fashion, and usually with a message. This work can be described as ‘socially critical’, although ‘socially comical’ would fit the bill equally well. His pruning of the plants represents the role we play in influencing nature and the climate. The impact that Scheffer has on a shrub is negligible compared with what is happening to the rainforests, yet what he does still manages to evoke people’s emotions.
‘If Plants Could Talk’ is a ‘cutting-hedge’ project that gives the shrubs a personality. It gives them human emotions, sometimes happy and sometimes sad; they can appear to be comical, but that makes them all the more tragic because plants do nothave emotions and cannot speak up for themselves. In this work, the plants express not only their own helplessness but also the feelings of so many people who feel trapped and lonely as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown.
Olivier Scheffer (born 1969) is known for his playful interventions in public spaces. Since he gave up smoking and drinking in 2018, he has become an avid walker. On his walks he cuts back overgrown greenery, which has earned him the nickname ‘Wildsnoeier’, meaning ‘Rogue Topiarist’ in Dutch.
“If Plants Could Talk” is een project van de “Wildsnoeier”. De Wildsnoeier is een alter ego van Olivier Scheffer. Sinds twee jaar snoei hij her en der in de stad struiken, altijd conceptueel, meestal met een boodschap. Het werk is maatschappijkritisch alhoewel “maatschappij komisch” de lading ook dekt. Het snoeien in planten gaat over de rol die we spelen in het beïnvloeden van de natuur en het klimaat. De impact die Scheffer op die ene struik heeft is volledig onbeduidend ten opzichte van wat er in de regenwouden gebeurt, toch worden mensen emotioneel over wat hij doet.
“If Plants Could Talk” is een snoei-project waarbij struiken een gezicht krijgen. De struiken krijgen daardoor menselijke emoties, soms blij soms treurig, vaak lijkt het komisch maar daarom juist zo tragisch want planten hebben geen emoties en kunnen niet voor zichzelf praten. In dit werk vertolken de planten niet alleen hun eigen onvermogen maar ook de gevoelens van veel mensen die door de Covid-19 lock-down zich opgesloten voelen en vereenzamen.
Olivier Scheffer (1969) staat bekend om zijn ludieke interventies in de openbare ruimte. Sinds hij in 2018 rigoureus is gestopt met roken en drinken, is hij conceptueel wandelaar. Onderweg brengt hij verwaarloosd groen weer binnen de perken, hiermee heeft hij zichzelf de bijnaam ‘Wildsnoeier’ toegekend.
