I am base80, I used to be super famous for my Cinema 4d tutorial site base80.com, yep same me. I have almost completely stopped doing 3d-modeling and animation but hey, what I do now is kind of the same :-) Modeling shrubs and making GIFs and being fascinated by scale, dimension and shape.

Gardener in Residence @Motel Spatie

More faceplants

While traveling around I have the urge to trim plants, especially when they start winking at me 😉

This one is in Eindhoven the night before DDW 2018, thank you streetlights!

This was in Bergen (zuid Holland) during the opening of Bewarehouse.

50km “as the crow flies” vs. as I walk

I want to walk a distance of 50 km. So I started to draw a circle on the map with a 50km radius. At first I just imagined walking to an attractive place, so I plotted the walk using a walking nav app. Immediately I realized there was quite a gap between the 50km circle and the 50km walk. Intrigued I plotted as many places as needed to get an idea of how far or close a 50km walk would bring me from my home. The max distance would be 5km short of the 50km circle, not bad at all (Nieuwegein) The least far(!) walk is Middelharnis, just about 25km as the crow flies and still 50km walking distance.
So Middelharnis will be the same effort as Nieuwegein but only about half the distance. My choice is clear, I want the walk to be as efficient as possible, so Nieuwegein it is :-/

Circle Altenburg IPIHAN#8

I was in Altenburg for the IPIHAN#8 exhibition opening, I went there on foot and came a few days earlier than expected. So I asked if I could make a circle, luckily they gave me the best spot there was.

The place is an abandoned warehouse and factory with two coupled courtyards completely overgrown. My spot was on the central courtyard on the crossing of several “use-trails” (olifantenpad in Dutch). This crossing of natural paths was already in use for a makeshift barbecue and was prone to become the village square.
My intervention was to remove all vegetation and roots so to recover the pavement as it was way back when the building was in use. By doing this meticulously the place becomes like an archeological finding and because it is a perfect circle it is very intense and present. You can not not notice it. At first sight it is not clear to everybody that what you see is the recovered original pavement, because of the perfect geometry it also looks very artificial, like you would copy-paste a circle of pavement texture in photoshop into an image of wild nature.

The size of the circle was defined by the surrounding trees and ferns and was shy of 5 meter diameter, the size of the circle is defining its type of social gathering place. make it smaller (like last year in Zeits) and it becomes a much more intimate place for only one small group, make it twice as big and it will be a public square without cohesion between groups of people. Every size has its own social mechanics.
Funny thing is that only small children would stand right in the middle, otherwise that spot would stay empty or one would put a table there. The night before the opening we where about 16 persons and we would snugly fit sitting in a full circle, The busy night of the opening the circle was populated by several small groups but never one big one, often three or four smaller circles of people filled up the space leaving some room for passers by. The day of the exhibition the circle was used for public announcements, one would stand right in the middle to gather a group of people for guided tours of the exhibition, the size of the circle defining the size of the groups.

I made a super small circle the size of an oil drum in the second courtyard and uncovered a completely different pavement, this circle was not really meant to be seen or used as it was sitting outside of the main walking routes. Because of its size and the perfect black speckled white granite this circle looked much more photoshopped than the big one. The small size makes it fit for only one person, because it was evoking being placed under the spotlight only certain persons would stand into the circle, most others would stand around it on the vegetation, something that never happened with the big circle, the vegetation was a no go there.

51st Parallel North Results

I have walked the walk, in total the journey was 614 km long, the deviation to the north or south was +/- 7km (total 14.4km) total elevation 6573 meter, highest point 633 meter.
It took me 19 days, 18 nights, one slept outside all the others in hostel, hotels, and bed & breakfast.
The walk was sponsored by more than 70 people <3, the following on facebook where I posted twice a day was overwhelming.

Sponsor me for my 530km to Altenburg

Please sponsor me for my walk on the 51st Latitude from Sittard to Altenburg (see original post)
NL73 INGB 0008 0790 00

If paradise is half as nice (ipihan)#8

51st Parallel North – Sittard to Altenburg

I am going to walk to the opening of Ipihan#8 on the 51 parallel north (Lat51). I will start on the left bank of the Meuse near Sittard and walk towards the East for 21 days, approximately 25 km/day. I will walk as close to the lat 51 as is practical without making an obsession out of it.

I will start on August 2nd and arrive on the 22nd.
To make this possible I have asked for sponsoring on Facebook, 1 euro/km.
If you want to contribute, please do 🙂 NL73 INGB 0008 0790 00 (base80)

I will try to report back to my sponsors and friends on a daily basis of facebook and maybe on this site. As 4G is not deployed in this part of the world I will have to skip some reports.

Sitting in Public 2

The Park at the Euromast Rotterdam needs an update for a while (says Wim Pijbes). But hey that’s no reason not to do the necessary maintenance. Let me do it for you, Rotterdam.
Aside from bad maintenance it is a bit cruel to plant Holly behind a bench on such a nice spot in the park.

Vitamine K

I broke my arm a few years ago and it took a while before I got it repaired, I became depressed from waiting for the operation.
To save myself from a tiresome depression I asked all my friends on facebook to help me with Vitamine K (Kunst-Art).
The response was overwhelming, our house filled up with art everywhere, from people I know, from people everybody knows and from people I don’t know at all.
The Vitamine K worked fantastically it reversed my depression totally and proved once again one of the basic function of art in general, it is drugs.

Long story short, one of the works I got that day was this one from Jeroen Jongeleen:

So now, years later, I want to thank him and all the other people who helped me.
Thank you all!

🙁 Check out his site to see what else I want to copy.

Paris Rotterdam a 3 day walk

When walking in Paris one walks a lot, leaving the apartment, visiting A, B and C, eating, … and eventually getting back home.
At the end of the trip one feels exhausted and what I do is check my distances on my phone, in my case it is about 15 km a day. Not that much actually but still exhausted at the end of the day.

This is my three days walk in winter 2017

Check out what happens when you paste the trails on a city you know well, in my case my home town Rotterdam:

Those seemingly long walks look ridiculous don’t they?
The feeling of distance is strongly influenced by stimulus, the more stimulus the longer the meter.

Paris – Rotterdam

Paris Quatres Ports
First a simple side-by-side comparison of Rotterdam and Paris

Notice the huge difference in density and notice the two cities similarity in size.
Watch what happens when you swap a part of both cities:

Finally here is Île SaintLouis in the Seine in Paris at the same angle and size as the Radio Pier (Radiostraat) in the Merwehaven in Rotterdam.

I created the images as part of an online discussion about what to do with this part of the city and the apparent disinterest of city gouvernement in creating a comprehensive urban plan.
Showing the scale of this area compared to that of another city triggers a line of thought, by comparing it to Paris the value of the area changes completely.

Growing Handles

My little spade’s handle broke off, it was made of cheap plastics, so I thought of fixing it to one of my catapult weapon-wood sticks.
Then I remembered the idea of Maurice Meewisse to ask a tree to make hammer handles. So I copied the idea and fixed the spade in a hedge (Liguster). Now the waiting begins.

Check this post in 2020 🙂

Walking in Circles

Idea for the winter: Walking in Circles and having a gps-track as a visual result.
It is like walking like a goat attached to a rope to a pole in a complexly shaped garden but then without a goat, pole, rope or garden. You know in movies when one says: “Secure the Perimeter” or “Establish a perimeter of lalala meter”, well I get this image in my mind, the image of an exact perimeter of that size.

So that is exactly what I am going to do, I will setup a perimeter of a fixed size starting at a certain point in a certain place by walking around it clockwise by skirting obstacles on my left hand.
I am curious about the shape of the line and what it says about the place I walked the circle. I can assume a circle in Paris will be different from one in New York. Will the place be easily recognizable?

I realized that the reverse perimeter is interesting too, it is the shape restraining order 🙂 I can’t come closet than 300 yard… This is also a sentence we use without seeing the consequences, well let me draw you a picture:

P.S.: Idea copied from Jeroen Jongeleen’s Running a circle clockwise except I will not be running, nothing will be visible in situ and mine is bigger.

P.S.: I will probably walk the perimeter of a circle with an initial surface of 1 square kilometer thus with a ø of 1.12837916709551 kilometer. Thereafter I will calculate resulting surface.

Sticks that could become useful.

A growing collection of sticks that could become useful, mostly Y-shaped as that is the best shape to be catapulted in becoming a weapon.
The collection should include weapon-shaped wood and then tool-shaped wood and a section of idiotically shaped wood. That last category is the most likely one to be named art.

DePot Boijmans

I have a dream! The Reversed Hedge Trimming Project.

In the period the museum is closing for renovation I would like to shape one of the hedges to look like the DePot.

And you should seriously consider using your hedge for Hedgevertising! (speak out loud when you have a cold)
